Was going to pay this a visit as part of a crawl in Huddersfield a couple of weekends ago but unfortunately when we got there they told us that they were not opening until 9pm. WhatPub says it opens at 5pm, so not sure if they were having issues on the day or if opening times have changed. Check before making a special visit.

Once upon a time this was the tap for Hand Drawn Monkey brewery and there is still evidence of this especially on the floor in the left hand room. The interior has been extensively described by others below, so as usual I won't bother. I didn't mind this place at all, despite the ridiculous height of the bar. My pint of Three Fiends Bad Uncle Barry was in good nick as well. I'd be interested to call in on an evening to see what it's like then as we were the only people in the bar during the PuG crawl, so it was full of reprobates. :-))

Apparently Huddersfield’s original micro pub, this is now an independent Craft beer house after the demise of the Hand Drawn Monkey brewery last year. Full marks for keeping it as a venue to try a good range of decent Keg and Cask beers but I didn’t really warm to this one.
Up some steps from the street level entrance the bar room on the right with its ridiculously low floor or ridiculously high bar top depending on where you stand (see what I did there :-) ) isn’t that comfortable a space for a beer, and then the main sitting room to the left with its distressed furniture and shabby chic sofa seating , which apparently has been improved since opening, still too closely resembled some of the dodgy student flats I dossed in during the late 70’s when I had no money. And if I was sitting in one of the reclaimed sofas I would be constantly worried that the bits of plasterboard nailed to the ceiling were going to collapse onto my bonce at any given moment to be able to enjoy the beer.
For the record Three Fields Bad Uncle Barry, Mallinson's Stadium, Great Heck Patrick and Settle Aftermire were on the four pumps and the Mallinson’s Stadium Pale was perfectly passable.
I can fully appreciate that I am probably not the target demographic for this place and perhaps this bar comes to life when its full of young things with a live band going in the back room. But with the increasing number of new craft beer bars setting up round the country I’ve seen it done a lot better than here.
